Optical Systems and Characterization

Expertise

Long-wave IR Optics

The mid- and far-IR regimes are the last frontiers of the EM spectrum, and for good reason. From spectroscopy to polarimetry, we have experience building the optical setups everyone avoids, bringing new information and capability at underutilized wavelengths.

Materials and Devices

Novel materials and devices push the bleeding edge, often requiring more sophisticated characterization. With experience characterizing active metasurfaces, quantum sensors, and advanced topological materials, we invent new optical and transport measurements for new ideas.

Quantum Optics

Turning quantum potential into reality requires bridging the gap between theory and practical implementation. We design quantum optical measurement systems that help your project step beyond classical limits and fully into the quantum domain.

Polarimetry

Polarization measurements are often misunderstood, underestimated, and underutilized. As experts in polarimetry (at all wavelengths) we can design and invent measurements that go beyond the capabilities and scope of off the shelf polarimeters.

Magnetometry

Magnetometry is at the heart of our expertise. From classic MOKE to completely novel optical-transport, spectroscopy, and microscopy methods, we can bring expert know-how and intuition to magnetic measurements of all kinds.

Prototyping and Reduction

Experimental physics is messy business, and so is prototyping. We want to apply our passion and expertise in building completely new things to your ideas, shortening the time and cost between conception and reduction to practice.

Zach Brown PhD, Experimental Condensed Matter Physicist

I’m an experimental physicist with a practical, hands-on approach to solving technical problems, from routine measurements to complex system design. I am an expert in  I work methodically, with a data-first mindset and a focus on intuition, reasoning, and a clear understanding of underlying mechanisms. I’m driven by the conviction that technical work should create real value—whether by solving pressing problems, enabling innovation, or opening new opportunities.

My strengths include optical system design, electronics, novel measurement techniques, and data analysis/interpretation. I’ve built custom instruments capable of performing entirely new types of measurements. While I love delicate hands-on experimentation, I also enjoy automating my systems and designing user interfaces that make them accessible to others. In my previous lab, I actively trained colleagues and ensured that setups were intuitive and maintainable. I’m comfortable bridging mechanical, electrical, and computational domains, and I prioritize reliability, clarity, and efficiency in every project. I’m also skilled at working within tight resource constraints, often developing creative, low-cost solutions without compromising performance.
